This multi-purpose and can be used in various stages, best being as a very young green bean, as a shelling bean when the seeds have swollen inside the pods, but not as hard yet, and as a dry bean if you allow it to dry on the bush. The beans are big with a grey and black mottled seed coat. The tongue of fire also refers to the intense red/pink of the pods as they mature, which makes it easier to pick as well.
