Butternut – Tromboncino Squash

One of the highlights of our past growing season. Tromboncino Squash produces 12 fruit per plant and the best part is that they can be enjoyed when young the same way as baby marrows and as they mature they are monster butternuts. The shape is dependent on if the fruit grows on the ground or hanging. The latter produces up to 70cm long gourd-looking fruit. Tromboncino has many advantages over normal butternut. The long necks are so easy to cut into coins and then you still have the bottoms that can be halved and filled with minces, corn, cheese, beans, or whatever you want to. The plants do take up a fair amount of space so keep this in mind when planting them, They love to climb so a trellis would be ideal but not necessary. The plants have great resistance against powdery mildew and that makes a big difference in their yields. One fruit will feed a family with ease, so be prepared and get the recipe book out as you will need to try and keep it interesting. They store well too.
