Tomatoes – Reise

What an unusual tomato this is. Reise is also known as Journey or Travellers Tomatoes and the story behind it is believable to a point. This variety in essence is a cherry-type tomato that produces super flowers that end up making smaller fruit clumps and grow together. The name suggests that when you travel a long distance you can break off and eat segments from the fruit as you need and put the rest of the tomato away without it spoiling too quickly. Synonymous with cherry-type tomatoes the plants are very productive and you’ll be rewarded with many fruits to take on your journey. The flavor isn’t the standout characteristic here and the fruit is rather bland. Segments come off easily without making a mess and can be added to salads, but there are better-tasting varieties out there. Very weird to experience these firsthand, but they’ll make a good conversation piece with just about anyone. Grown as a novelty variety and one that everybody should at least experience once in their lifetime!
