Introducing Ampelomyces quisqualis (AQ-SF): A Native Fungal Hyperparasite from South Africa
Ampelomyces quisqualis (AQ-SF) is a native fungal isolate indigenous to South Africa, renowned for its exceptional ability as a hyperparasite targeting the common Powdery Mildew (PM). This remarkable organism has demonstrated its prowess by effectively combating up to 64 different varieties of mildew.
Plants afflicted by PM often exhibit distinctive white fluff patches, typically on their leaves or stems. PM has a detrimental impact as it infiltrates plant cell walls, depriving them of essential nutrients and vital fluids, ultimately leading to the plant’s demise.
With the application of AQ-SF, a transformative process unfolds. The spores of A. quisqualis infiltrate the mycelium growth of PM, gradually permeating its structure over the course of several days. During this period, PM neither thrives nor multiplies. Instead, A. quisqualis thrives within the very ‘strands’ of PM, culminating in the demise of the mildew. Regrettably, any plant tissue previously infected by PM and subsequently terminated by A. quisqualis will also meet the same fate.
For optimal results, AQ-SF is most effective when employed as a preventative measure, rather than a curative solution. It exhibits resilience through winter months and intercrop periods, with its greatest efficacy observed in warmer temperature ranges, typically between 20-30°C.
It’s important to note that AQ-SF is not compatible with copper, sulfates, general fungicides, oxidizers, or sterilizers.
