  • Fast Composting: Breaks down organic waste quickly.
  • Hardy and Resilient: Survives in a wide range of temperatures (13°C-32°C).
  • Low Maintenance: Simple to care for with minimal upkeep.
  • Eco-Friendly: Reduces landfill waste and enriches soil naturally.

Getting Started with Red Wiggler Composting

1. Prepare Your Bin:

  • Choose a bin: Select a worm bin that suits your space. This could be a simple plastic container or a more elaborate commercial worm composter. Ensure the bin has adequate ventilation and drainage.
  • Add Bedding: Use materials such as shredded newspaper, cardboard, dried leaves, or coconut coir. Moisten the bedding to the consistency of a wrung-out sponge.

2. Add Your Worms:

  • Introduce your Red Wigglers to the prepared bedding. Start with about 500-1,000 worms for a small bin.

3. Feeding Your Worms:

  • Feed your worms kitchen scraps like fruit and vegetable peels, coffee grounds, and eggshells. Avoid meat, dairy, oily foods, and citrus as these can harm your worms or attract pests.
  • Bury food scraps in the bedding to reduce odors and deter pests. Feed small amounts at first and adjust based on how quickly the worms process the food.

4. Maintenance:

  • Keep the bin in a location where the temperature remains between 13°C and 32°C.
  • Maintain moisture levels, ensuring the bedding remains damp but not waterlogged.
  • Every 2-3 weeks, gently turn the compost to aerate it.

5. Harvesting Compost:

  • After 3-6 months, your bin will be filled with worm castings, also known as vermicompost. This rich, dark material can be harvested and used as a natural fertilizer for your plants.
  • Separate the worms from the compost by moving the contents to one side of the bin and adding fresh bedding and food to the other side. The worms will migrate to the fresh side, making it easier to collect the compost.

Starting with Red Wigglers is an excellent way to reduce waste and create a sustainable, nutrient-rich soil amendment for your garden. Enjoy the benefits of vermicomposting and watch your plants thrive!
