Important: pH sensor care and storage
Proper care and storage of the pH sensor is extremely important. Even on a brand new unit, letting the sensor dry out can permanently damage the glass electrode, which shows up as wrong or unstable readings.
- Always keep the sensor moist. Never store the sensor dry. Put a few drops of pH storage solution (for Bluelab probes, the KCl storage solution) inside the protective cap so the tip stays hydrated. Do not use distilled or pure water for storage.
- Clean after use. After each test, rinse the electrode tip thoroughly with pure or distilled water, and gently shake off the excess water before replacing the protective cap.
- Cap securely. Always make sure the protective cap is tightly closed after use, so the storage liquid cannot evaporate.
Damage caused by the sensor drying out or by improper storage is not covered by a warranty or return.
Why measure pH and temperature?
Get the fundamentals of growing right, every time
Healthy growing plants, just like humans, need a balanced diet of appropriate nutrients (food). However, plants can only access these nutrients when the nutrient solution is within a certain pH range.
From a water chemistry perspective, pH (potential Hydrogen) plays a pivotal role in making the nutrients in your solution soluble so that they can be accessed by your plants. That’s why if your growing solution becomes too acidic or too alkaline, the plants won’t be able to get access to the nutrients they need to grow. The temperature of your growing solution is equally important as having a solution that’s too hot or too cold can affect growth rate and structure.
To help your plants thrive, get the fundamentals right by measuring pH and temperature to ensure that these are always in the optimal range.
A compact and robust handheld solution
Everyday accuracy of the fundamentals
This user-friendly and hardy handheld pen will take measurements in increments of 0.1 pH and is fully temperature compensated, so you can expect accurate readings every time.
New Zealand-made quality, built for growers
Our products are designed and built for grower environments – not the lab – so you can relax knowing that your pen can withstand the knocks, drops and deep-water plunges that come with everyday growing. In fact, the fully waterproof Bluelab pH Pen is designed to float when it lands up in your reservoir.
The Bluelab pH Pen was designed and built in New Zealand. Tried and trusted by growers all over the world, this essential tool is one of our top-selling products.
Combine it with the Conductivity Pen
Create the ultimate Grower’s Toolbox
Conductivity and pH are connected. When preparing a new nutrient solution, you’ll need to add the appropriate amount of nutrients according to the plants’ needs. Once you’ve checked the conductivity (EC or PPM), which confirms whether the nutrient levels are correct, you’ll then need to regularly adjust the pH to ensure those nutrients are available to the plant.
After all, nutrients are expensive so it’s important that you always optimise them.
With the Bluelab Conductivity Pen, you can take measurements of your nutrient solution to ensure that your plants truly flourish.
