Our premium frass is more than just a fertiliser; it’s a complete soil and plant biostimulant. Sustainably produced right here in South Africa, it’s the secret ingredient that professional growers and passionate gardeners are turning to for unparalleled results.
Â
What Exactly is Insect Frass?
Â
Insect frass is the scientific term for insect manure and exoskeletons. Our frass is produced by Black Soldier Fly larvae that are raised on a clean, controlled diet of pre-consumer agricultural by-products. This remarkable process upcycles nutrients that would otherwise go to waste, creating a 100% natural, nutrient-dense, and microbially active soil amendment.
It is a perfect example of a circular economy – transforming waste into a high-value product that regenerates soil and nourishes the food we grow, without the environmental cost of synthetic chemicals.
Â
The Science: How Frass Transforms Your Garden
Â
Insect Frass works on multiple levels, delivering a symphony of benefits that synthetic fertilisers simply cannot replicate.
Â
1. Complete, Slow-Release Nutrition
Â
Unlike harsh synthetic fertilisers that can burn roots and leach into waterways, our insect frass provides a balanced and gentle diet for your plants.
Balanced NPK: It contains a healthy profile of Nitrogen (for lush leaf growth), Phosphorus (for strong roots and vibrant flowers), and Potassium (for overall plant resilience and health).
Rich in Micronutrients: Frass is packed with essential micronutrients like copper, zinc, and manganese, which are vital for plant enzyme function and overall vitality.
Slow-Release Formula: The nutrients are bound in an organic form, meaning they are released slowly and steadily as microbes break them down. This provides a consistent food source for your plants, preventing the “boom and bust” cycle of chemical feeds.
Â
2. Activating Your Plant’s Natural Shield: The Chitin Effect
Â
This is the game-changing benefit that sets insect frass apart. Frass contains chitin (pronounced KY-tin), a component of insect exoskeletons.
Natural Defence Signal: When a plant’s roots or leaves detect chitin, they perceive a threat from pests. This triggers a natural, plant-wide immune response called Systemic Acquired Resistance (SAR).
Boosting Defences: The plant begins to produce defensive compounds, such as enzymes (like chitinase) and phenolics. These make the plant less palatable to leaf-chewing pests and strengthen its cell walls, making it more difficult for fungal diseases like powdery mildew and blight to take hold.
A Proactive Approach: You aren’t just reacting to pests; you are building a plant that is inherently stronger and better equipped to defend itself.
Â
3. Building a Thriving Soil Ecosystem
Â
Healthy plants start with healthy soil. Insect frass is a powerful prebiotic for your soil’s microbial community.
Food for the Soil Food Web: The organic matter and chitin in frass are a gourmet meal for beneficial bacteria and fungi, including mycorrhizal fungi.
Unlocking Nutrients: This explosion in microbial life helps to unlock existing nutrients in your soil, making them more available for your plants to absorb. These microbes are the essential link between soil fertility and plant health.
Suppressing Pathogens: A thriving community of beneficial microbes can outcompete and suppress harmful soil-borne pathogens and root-feeding nematodes.
Â
4. Superior Soil Structure & Water-Wise Gardening
Â
Especially relevant for our Western Cape climate, frass dramatically improves soil quality.
Improved Aeration and Drainage: The organic matter helps bind soil particles into aggregates, creating better structure for healthy root growth.
Enhanced Water Retention: Frass acts like a sponge, significantly increasing your soil’s ability to hold moisture. This means you water less frequently, saving a precious resource while reducing plant stress during dry spells.
Â
Comprehensive Directions for Use
Â
(For best results, always use dechlorinated water (e.g., tap water left to stand for 24 hours) to protect the beneficial microbes in the frass.)
As a Soil Amendment (for garden beds & new plantings):
Mix 100g (approx. 1 cup) per square metre () into the top 10-15 cm of your soil. For potting mix, blend in at a rate of 1 cup of frass for every 10L of soil.
As a Root Drench (for established plants):
Mix 50-100g (approx. ½ to 1 cup) per 5L of water. Stir well and let it steep for 30 minutes to an hour. Water the soil around the base of your plants every 2-3 weeks during the growing season.
As a Foliar Spray (for direct feeding & defence):
Mix 1-2 teaspoons per 5L of water. Stir thoroughly.
Pro-Tip: Strain the liquid through a fine cloth, old t-shirt, or stocking before adding it to your sprayer. This is crucial to prevent clogging the nozzle.
Spray generously on the tops and undersides of leaves weekly, preferably in the early morning or late afternoon.
Choose Grow Folk Insect Frass and join the movement towards a more sustainable, resilient, and productive way of gardening. Your plants will thank you for it!
